The power supply manufacturer Seasonic has proposed a rather original tip to reduce the risk of burning the connector on its RTX 4090 graphics card: use a hairdryer to soften the cable. Not stupid really.

The issue of melting graphics card connectors will probably never stop being talked regarding. The new 12VHPWR connector on Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 still seems problematic for users, and has been for over a year.
While many solutions have been offered by various manufacturers for months, such as right-angled cables or a more secure 12V-2×6 connector (compatible with the next RTX Super), Seasonic also has its two cents.
The renowned manufacturer of PC power supplies has in fact published a guide for its users in order to minimize the possibility of overheating connectors connected to high-end Nvidia graphics cards. And one of her tips is to use… a hair dryer.
A hairdryer to avoid overheating?
The instructions on the official Seasonic website are very clear: to make the connection of the power cable linked to the GPU as secure as possible, you must pay close attention to its curvature.
The position of the 12VHPWR connector for graphics cards actually forces the cable to bend, which is not good for the tension of the different pins, which are much more numerous on this generation.
If the manufacturer recalls one of the instructions already well known since last year, namely only applying the curvature from the first 35 millimeters, its other tip is original to say the least.
To soften the cable, Seasonic recommends using a hairdryer on the area to be bent, which will cause less pressure on the different pins of the plug once plugged in. The manufacturer has, however, removed this instruction from its site as we write these lines, in response to the various mockery that may have emerged in recent hours on the web.
One new cable to rule them all
The fact remains that this tip is not the stupidest and can, in many cases, facilitate the cable management of a desktop computer. Seasonic, however, offers a more durable solution with a new 12V-2×6 cable with a right-angle connector for graphics cards from 2024 and beyond, like what a manufacturer like CableMod already offers.
These cables will initially be available to a few hundred users before being delivered with the brand’s next power supplies in 2024, in particular for the future GeForce RTX Super.
