In the United States, using a sperm bank can be very expensive. A single bottle can cost more than $1,000. This situation would push more and more women to circumvent this system, reports Business Insider. Facebook groups have even been created to be able to communicate with sperm donors who do not ask for money. An unregulated approach which obviously carries risks.
A shortage of donors
Two women, for example, used these sperm donors found on Facebook. They agreed on a homemade artificial insemination: the donor went to their home during the ovulation period of the woman wanting to carry the baby, then ejaculated into a cup. Then, using a syringe, the woman was able to directly insert the sperm into herself. All with equipment that is easy to obtain.
The motivations of these men are not always clear. “I try to do a lot of things to help as many people as possible, whatever way I help them,” one of them, aged 32, explained to our colleagues. He cannot be a sperm bank donor due to his family’s medical history. Like him, many potential donors would be excluded from sperm banks in the United States, because genetic diseases would be tested much more than before. This would lead to a shortage which would potentially be the cause of these prices becoming very high.
Dangers and contract
However, beyond the risks for the child, there are other dangers on these alternative and unregulated circuits. Some men necessarily want to go through natural insemination, while others want to witness the insemination. Furthermore, there are also scammers who extract money from victims in exchange for donating sperm… which they do not do.
To limit risks, future parents and donors sometimes agree on a contract. This document determines the place of the donor in the life of the future child, in order, in particular, to ensure that he will not recognize the child as his own and will not have to pay child support. The fact remains that these contracts do not have legal value in all American states.
