Tom Hanks quit using Twitter because he didn’t see the point. He addressed his relationship with social media in an interview for The New York Times Magazine.
The ‘Saving Private Ryan’ actor was a regular on Twitter and was known to share photos of lost items he found on the streets. However, while his account is still active, he hasn’t tweeted since May 2020.
In an interview for the New York Times Magazine, he explained that the social network seemed useless to him, because he no longer needed to advertise. “I stopped posting because, first, I thought it was a meaningless exercise. I have enough attention on me,” he said, before explaining that receiving insults in the comments also deterred him from tweeting.
“But also, I’d post something goofy like, ‘Here’s a pair of shoes I saw in the middle of the street,’ and the third comment was, ‘Fuck you, Hanks.’ don’t know if I want to give a platform to this kind of guy. If the third comment is, ‘Fuck you, Obama-worshipping communist,’ it’s like, I don’t need that,” the 66-year-old star added.
The Oscar-winning actor addressed his absence from Twitter following discussing the political divide in the United States and said social media has led to the truth being deemed essential. “That’s only going to change when enough people say, ‘Holy shit, I’ll never pay attention to social media once more,'” he said.
Tom Hanks also put his Instagram on hiatus in 2020, but resumed posting in June. He has, however, disabled the comments section on his posts.
