Military observer from the Institute for Security and Strategic Studies (ISESS) Khairul Fahmi believes that at the moment of its 79th anniversary, the TNI must continue to adhere to the principles of professionalism, integrity and improve its capabilities.
“As the front guard in maintaining state sovereignty, the TNI must continue to improve its capabilities, especially in the modern era with increasingly complex challenges such as cyber threats and regional conflicts,” said Fahmi when contacted, Friday (4/10).
Nevertheless, according to Fahmi, there are still several things that need to be evaluated within the TNI itself. First, related to the role and function of the TNI in the business sector.

Fahmi said that the reemergence of discourse allowing the TNI to be involved in business is something that needs to be considered very carefully.
In the past, continued Fahmi, the TNI’s involvement in business actually caused many problems, including corruption and abuse of power.
“If this discourse is forced, there are concerns that it could damage the TNI’s neutrality and professionalism, as well as obscure the TNI’s main focus in maintaining state security,” he said.

Then, what the TNI must evaluate next is related to modernization and budget. Fahmi said, along with increasingly complex security challenges, modernizing the TNI’s defense equipment must be a priority. However, the realization must also be transparent and measurable.
“With the increase in the military budget, it is very important for the TNI to ensure that the management of this budget is effective, without any irregularities. The involvement of the private sector and strong supervision from the government and the public can be part of the reforms needed,” he said.
Apart from that, Fahmi also highlighted the relationship between civil society and the military. According to him, the TNI must strengthen its commitment to democracy and civil supremacy, so that it does not get caught up in political interests or the interests of certain elites.

“The TNI must ensure that its loyalty remains to the state, not to certain individuals or groups,” he said.
Furthermore, Fahmi also encouraged the TNI to improve its cyber capabilities. According to Fahmi, currently threats are no longer limited to the physical area, but also the virtual world.
He said that the formation of the TNI’s cyber dimension was a very good step, but it needed to be supported by clear commitment and policies.
