Hikvision, a company that operates in the security sector, develops projects that aim to improve and facilitate the monitoring of locations in different segments through partnerships. One example is TK Tecnologia, from São Paulo, responsible for modernizing access control at Banco Daycoval. The previous system, which used badges and biometrics, was replaced by a solution with facial recognition using cameras, combined with biometrics.

According to a recent survey, 78% of Brazilian companies plan to increase their investment in electronic security in 2025. Data from Brazilian Association of Electronic Security Systems Companies (Abese) indicate that the sector is expected to continue expanding in the coming years, with a continued increase in demand for security cameras, access control, alarms and sensors.

When the financial institution identified the need to modernize the doors and turnstiles, TK Tecnologia, in partnership with Hikvision, presented a solution that was implemented gradually, without interrupting the previous system. The project was completed in 60 days.

The difference between the software used is its integration capacity. It is a managed system, which monitors all points from a single program in the matrix, centralizing control of all doors in one place.

“The system has been a success, both in terms of operation and technical feedback from the financial institution and the team responsible for the operation. Given the need to customize the software, with the support of Hikvision, we were able to customize reports so that Daycoval’s security perfectly met the audit requirements”, shares Vitor Kling, director of TK Tecnologia.

On the terminal with a camera, user authorizations are more secure and reliable. It is equipped with event coupling, spoof detection, CCTV integration and recognition-in-the-dark functions, working in a variety of scenarios that require access control management. Additionally, the integrated facial image anti-spoofing tool boosts the level of protection at entry points. All personal data is encrypted to protect information, including in optional privacy mode.

“Through the partnership with TK Tecnologia, our software (Hikcentral) was customized to meet Daycoval’s needs, providing greater security at the facilities”, says Rodrigo Acosta, BDM at Hikvision.

What are the ethical challenges posed by facial recognition technology, and what steps can⁢ be taken to mitigate those challenges?

## Facial Recognition: A ⁣Double-Edged Sword?

**(INTRO MUSIC)**

**HOST:**‌ Welcome back to the show. Today we’re ⁢diving into the increasingly ⁤prevalent use of‍ facial recognition technology. While⁣ there‌ are clear benefits to ⁢this technology, there⁤ are also ⁤concerns about its implications for privacy and potential misuse. Joining us to discuss this complex issue‌ is Dr. Emily Carter, a privacy advocate and professor of technology ethics. Dr. Carter, thanks for being here.

**DR. CARTER:** Thanks for having ‌me.

**HOST:**⁣ Let’s start with the basics. ‍What ‍exactly is facial ⁢recognition technology⁤ and how is it being ‌used?

**DR. CARTER:** Facial recognition technology utilizes algorithms to analyze facial features from images or video footage. It’s being used in various ⁢applications, from unlocking our smartphones⁣ to identifying suspects in law enforcement. [[1](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2022/03/17/public-more-likely-to-see-facial-recognition-use-by-police-as-good-rather-than-bad-for-society/)]

**HOST:** Now, according to recent surveys, a growing number of companies are investing in facial recognition for security purposes.⁢ Some see it ⁣as a positive development in terms of ⁤preventing crime and enhancing security. What’s ⁣your take on this?

**DR.‌ CARTER:** ⁢There are certainly potential benefits. Enhancing security‍ in high-risk‌ areas or ‍assisting in investigations are valid ‌applications. ⁤However, it’s crucial to ensure these systems are implemented responsibly⁢ and ethically. We need clear regulations to prevent misuse and protect individual privacy.

**HOST:** Absolutely. ‍There are concerns ⁢about the⁣ potential‍ for bias and inaccuracies in facial⁣ recognition systems, leading to ‌wrongful identification and targeting of individuals based on race or other characteristics.

**DR. CARTER:** That’s a major concern. ‍ These algorithms are often trained on datasets that may be skewed, leading‌ to inaccuracies⁣ particularly for certain demographics. ⁢This can have serious repercussions, ⁣reinforcing existing inequalities rather than promoting safety.

**HOST:** How can we strike ⁢a⁢ balance ⁤between harnessing the ⁤benefits of facial recognition technology while ‌mitigating its potential harms?

**DR. CARTER:** Transparency and⁤ accountability‌ are key. ⁤We need open discussions⁢ about ‌the ethical implications of using this technology, involving experts, policymakers, and ⁢the ‍public. Robust regulations and oversight mechanisms are imperative to‌ ensure responsible development and deployment.

**HOST:** ⁣Thanks for shedding light on this important issue, ‍Dr.⁣ Carter. As facial recognition technology continues to evolve, ‌it’s vital that we proceed with caution and prioritize ⁢ethical considerations alongside technological advancements.
