Another draw against FCZ: FCB cannot break free
FC Basel gets a point in the classic against FC Zurich in the relegation battle. FCB got off to a bad start and fell behind early on, but the game turned around until the break with two impressive goals. After the break, the FCZ managed to equalize. It is already the third draw against the city of Zurich this season.

The game: It’s a real nightmare start that FC Basel got off to in the classic against FC Zurich. Initially, two protests from both fan camps delayed the game, but as soon as the ball rolled, FCB was always one step too late. After just three minutes, Bledian Krasniqi missed the first great chance for the guests from Zurich. But shortly afterwards it happened: At a corner, Lindrit Kamberi escaped from his guards in the middle and headed in for an early lead. Things are getting tough for FCB: Renato Veiga has to be taken off injured in the starting quarter of an hour and replaced by Finn van Breemen.
The home team recovers but doesn’t pose a threat offensively for a long time. Until the 27th minute. Then Leon Avdullahu beautifully scored the equalizer with his first goal in the Super League. It’s the wake-up call we’ve been hoping for. Suddenly the home team is more aggressive offensively – and twice in the 39th minute. As in the 1-1 draw, it was Barry who opened the scoring, but this time Anton Kade finished with a dry shot into the far corner.
But in order to actually go into the break with a lead, FCB needs a lot of luck. After Marwin Hitz can only fend off a shot from a corner, Nikola Katic fails to push the ball into the empty goal.
The Zurich team also got off to a better start in the second half – and once again they rewarded themselves early. And once again it is a corner that is FCB’s undoing. Dominik Schmid unluckily clears the ball at the feet of Cheick Condes, who doesn’t need to be asked twice and makes it 2-2.
From now on it becomes a game of equals, but the really big chances mostly fail to materialize. At FCB, Kade and Romeo Beney come closest to taking the lead again. On the other hand, the guests are slowed down by the video referee. This sees a foul on Dominik Schmid in the early stages, which is why referee Sandro Schärer reverses the penalty whistle after Fabian Frei intervenes in the penalty area.
FCB will overtake Yverdon and Lausanne-Sport in the table, at least until Monday, and are now eighth. He extends his lead over the Barrage place to three points. Because GC and Lausanne-Sport meet in a direct duel on Monday, it is clear that FCB cannot slip into the Barrage place this Easter weekend. It continues on Tuesday evening with the away game against the extremely strong FC Lugano.
The best: Thierno Barry is busy as usual and travels long distances. And he rewards himself and his teammates. In both the 1:1 and 2:1 he has his feet in the game and serves first Avdullahu and then Kade exemplary.
This was something to talk about: It is the crucial scene of the game. After 85 minutes, Sandro Schärer decided on a penalty for FC Zurich after Fabian Freis got in against Jonathan Okita. A winning goal would probably be the decision. But the video referee asks Schärer to go to the monitor. And he sees there how Fabian Rohner hit Dominik Schmid with his elbow in an aerial duel. Schärer then reverses the decision and the score remains 2-2.
