The Titan submarine was en route to the Titanic when it imploded. An expert doubts the salvage of the diving capsule and the human remains.

Munich – The last dive of the “Titan” ended in disaster. On the way to the wreck of the Titanic, the submarine imploded with the five occupants. The first pieces of debris could be recovered, and human remains were presumably found. As tragic as the accident is, it also caused a lot of criticism. The chairman of the German Titanic Association also questions the salvage of the submarine wreck.

Submarine disaster with “Titan”: Titanic expert questions recovery of the diving capsule – “Deliberately exposed to risk”

The “Titan” diving capsule was apparently never tested. No certification body was willing to certify it, a submarine expert said in an interview with Merkur.de von IPPEN.MEDIA. The people who got into the submarine were “aware of all the risks and dangers,” said Malte Fiebing-Petersen, chairman of the German Titanic Association Welt. This is also why he is against salvaging the submarine wreck. Because the “expenses financed by tax money” can already be disputed, says the chairman.

“When I see how many planes, diving robots from France, various ships and hundreds of people were involved because – with all due respect – ‘only’ five people were willing to consciously expose themselves to a certain risk,” says Fiebing-Petersen. An implosion has a strong impact on the body, in addition to the strong current. Even when the Titanic sank, only leather shoes could be found, nobody wore shoes in the “Titan”, explained Fiebing-Petersen in the conversation.

After submarine accident: Expert sees “new chapter of the ‘Titanic’ saga”

The chairman of the Titanic Association has long criticized the company OceanGate. The dive trips were advertised by the “Titan” developers as a scientific expedition, which referred to customers as expedition members. “The company has never really admitted that voyages on the Titanic are purely for profit. And that despite the fact that OceanGate is a company that has its financiers and has to serve shareholders – and thus clearly has to generate sales,” said Fiebing-Petersen.

In his opinion, the “Titan” disaster “opens a whole new chapter in the ‘Titanic’ saga.” The accident will hardly mean that trips to the “Titanic” will no longer take place. Fiebing-Petersen cannot imagine that, despite the events, no one can claim to build a safer submarine than the “Titan”. The business is too lucrative. “You can easily earn a lot of money with this topic, the wreck of the ‘Titanic’ will continue to attract people in the future,” he summed up.

Even though the trip to the “Titanic” was dangerous, a submarine pilot defended the dive: “The five men weren’t crazy.” (vk)
