DENVER (AP) — Four men were shot to death and a woman was hospitalized with a gunshot wound in a wave of violence over the weekend in the Denver suburb of Commerce City. A person of interest in one of the cases was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police reported Sunday.

Separately, one person was shot and three others were injured in two separate incidents on Sunday in the Denver metropolitan area of Aurora.

A series of shootings and stabbings in Denver left one person dead and six others injured, police said.

Joanna Small, a spokeswoman for the Commerce City Police Department, said it was an “extremely violent” weekend for the rapidly expanding community of about 70,000 people. It is located northeast of Denver, near the city’s airport.

“We average about five or six homicides a year,” he said. “Now we’re talking about four murders within 39 hours and an extremely serious individual… the fact that there is no connection between these crimes is even more troubling.”

A possible motive for the shooting has not been released.

The first incident occurred on Friday night in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven convenience store in Commerce City. A man and a woman suffered gunshot wounds, and the man later died. As of Sunday morning, the woman remained hospitalized in critical condition, according to Small.

Police later attempted to contact a truck driver involved in the shooting, but he fled and was found dead by suicide Sunday morning.

A man was shot and killed Saturday night in the parking lot of a park with a swimming pool in Commerce City. One person was detained, but Small declined to provide further details.

Later that night, police responded to a shooting detected by the Commerce City shooting surveillance system. According to authorities, police found a stolen vehicle with three people inside, who fled and then crashed. A passenger with a gunshot wound was found dead inside the vehicle.

A second passenger and driver were injured in the crash and taken into custody. Small said officers who returned to the scene of the shooting found a man shot to death in the yard of a residence.

He said the victim and others in the case are believed to be minors.

Small said there is no known connection between the shooting at the store, the park and the neighborhood. He declined to give further details, saying the investigation was ongoing.

The fatal shooting in Aurora occurred around 2 a.m. in the parking lot of a nightclub, according to police. No details about the deceased have been released yet. The second victim, a 34-year-old man, was shot multiple times but took himself to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said. No arrests have been made.

Around the same time, a man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries in a shooting at a residential complex in Aurora, police said. He added that the second person stabbed in that incident was expected to survive.
