Innsbruck (OTS) – Climate change doesn’t just mean a few degrees more. That shows up more and more often. Mountains crumble, fields wither, forests burn, glaciers melt. Global warming can still be stopped – with honest politics and clear rules.
There’s no going back to the good old days. When the summer nights are balmy and the winter snow lies in the valley. All of this will soon be just a nostalgic memory. So much oil and gas was burned, so many trees felled, so many cattle kept for the daily sausage roll that the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is far too high. The earth is warming up. Keep going. unbridled.
However, climate change does not just mean a few degrees more, as some regulars like to claim. Climate change means that droughts will be longer and storms more severe. Fields wither and forests burn because temperatures are rising and there is no rain. Existence crumbles to dust and goes up in smoke. The glaciers are disappearing, an important natural drinking water reservoir is drying up. The effects of global warming are becoming more and more apparent, and with increasing force. The landslide on the Flughorn near Galtür, triggered by the thawing of the permafrost, is just one more in a series of many examples.
Mankind will have to learn to live with some of the consequences of its hitherto ruthless treatment of nature. No matter what happens now: climate change will not disappear into thin air, cannot be annulled, nor can it be reversed. But he might be stopped. When words are finally followed by deeds and the necessary renunciation is both openly communicated and clearly regulated.
Politicians have tried for too long to fobb off the population with slogans of perseverance. Talked regarding high ambitions in climate protection and then continued as before. Also in Austria, also in Tyrol. Technical innovations that, if at all, would only be ready for use in decades were touted as saviors. A little honesty would do you good. It won’t work without impositions. Everyone must save emissions – from large industrial companies to ordinary citizens. And because the level of savings that would be required would be difficult to achieve with voluntary action, laws and regulations are needed to pave the way.
The climate catastrophe has long since begun, but can still be stopped. It is high time. Otherwise, not only does a mountain break off, but chaos ensues. Otherwise, not only will a summit cross fall down into the valley, but society as a whole will fall into ruin.
