Innsbruck (OTS) Agriculture is one of the cornerstones of the Tyrolean identity. But once once more the country is reaching the limits of basic European freedoms. Because the EU regulates too much centrally and the Europe of the regions is just a regional cloak.

Farming land in the hands of farmers: Politically, this principle, which has been around for decades, has lost none of its topicality. In view of only twelve percent of the area that can be settled, the concern today more than ever is that a valuable piece of Tyrolean homeland will be sold out. As with the illegal leisure residences, the oversized chalet villages or tourist investor models.
With accession to the European Union in 1995, the state of Tyrol had to liberalize its strict land policy. Although there were already some covered sins on the ground, including by the dominant ÖVP farmers’ association. A law cannot be so strict that it is not repeatedly interpreted in the interests of the more equal among the equal. Nevertheless: the self-cultivation and residence obligation were pillars of a rigorous agricultural policy to preserve farms and fields. And with it the identity of the country. With proper management, a lot was softened followingwards, at the same time a gray area was created.
The gradual decline in farms is currently promoting the sell-off in prime locations. Either because the farms are being abandoned or because they are easier to acquire. And then usually only serve as a rural facade for a (leisure) residence in the open air. Above all, the pressure from corporations and foundations from neighboring EU countries has increased significantly in recent years. The country wanted to take countermeasures with the tightened regulations. Comprehensible for the development of the country and to secure valuable production areas and farm real estate.
The de facto self-management obligation through the back door is therefore, like the shooting ordinance for problem wolves, a legal tightrope walk. A border crossing in dealing with the EU principles. But in contrast to the large predators, Tyrol has been on the European display for decades in terms of ground traffic. Because a lot of money is involved and Brussels always insists on compliance with the free movement of people and capital.
Unfortunately, the current occasion for the serious reprimand of the Constitutional Court with the donation of the monastery grounds to the Bavarian Ettal Monastery is the wrong one. Because the Benedictines certainly ensure sustainable management. But the law is the law, which must now be relaxed. Ultimately, however, the stale followingtaste remains that decisions are made regarding Tyrol’s problems from Brussels. Without taking into account the regional conditions and challenges – keyword traffic.
