Innsbruck (OTS) – The election of the new ÖVP Economic Association leadership is not just regarding the new chairman: the time following Governor Mattle and the future of the current Economic Association leader Franz Hörl are already in play.
The leadership debate in the Tyrolean ÖVP economic association is politically explosive because three of the five ÖVP government members are economic alliance members. In addition to State Governor Anton Mattle, there is also economics representative Mario Gerber, who would like to become chairman, and education and health officer Cornelia Hagele. Both Hagele and Gerber are seen as potential future hopes for the time following Mattle at the top of the Tyrolean ÖVP and the state.
As head of the economic association, Gerber would finally have the power that Hagele already has as chairwoman of the largest ÖVP district, Innsbruck-Land. It is no coincidence that Hagele supports her government colleague, as both stand for the renewal of content in the People’s Party. This includes her belief that the separation of offices between the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation should be maintained. The election on February 9th will be a directional decision, because Gerber’s competitor and Chamber President Barbara Thaler is pushing for the opposite.
The absolute dominance of the business association in the chamber is self-evident. Like those of the ÖVP workers’ wing in the Tyrolean Chamber of Labor or the farmers’ association in the Chamber of Agriculture. But at least in the Chamber of Workers and Farmers, the presidents act as interest representatives and not as alliance chairmen. A small but subtle difference, which signals a lot to the outside world: here the interest group, there the political party.
The outgoing Economic Association chairman Franz Hörl (67) might actually sit back contentedly and say goodbye. The Zillertaler has done a lot of things right. Business is well represented in the ÖVP’s political committees, and two candidates are fighting for rejuvenation at the top of the economic association. On the other hand, Hörl finds it very difficult to say goodbye to politics; following all, he still wants to play a part. At least in the National Council. This is also what the economic association election is regarding. Hörl believes he has better chances with Barbara Thaler, whom he has pushed for, as his successor.
