Borders need control. The crucial question is with which methods.
Innsbruck (OTS) – Brutality once morest refugees, as recently on Lesbos, has no consequences. The EU prefers to suppress crucial questions regarding migration.
At the Greek external border of the EU, asylum seekers, including mothers with babies and small children, were abandoned on the open sea in life rafts that were unable to manoeuvre. The campaign is documented with photos and videos by an Austrian refugee helper and research by the New York Times. The public is outraged. Rightly so. After all, Greece, where a new parliament is being elected today, is violating international law and EU values. At the same time, there is a lot of hypocrisy in this outrage. After all, so-called pushbacks, including the use of force at the EU’s external borders, are nothing new and have been a practice for years. According to a United Nations report, between 2020 and 2021 alone, at least 17,000 people were forcibly returned to Turkey. To date, this has had no consequences. Infringement proceedings once morest Greece have not been initiated. This also has to do with the fact that the European Commission likes to suppress the inhuman side of its asylum policy. For too many years, EU countries have not been able to agree on a common response to migration.
It is legitimate, politically imperative and morally justifiable to reduce irregular migration, including across the Mediterranean. The crucial question is, with which methods: by suspending human rights and the right to asylum, as is the case in Greece today? Or humane? In fact, it would be best and most humane to reduce irregular migration and organize the reception of refugees. As long as that doesn’t happen, people will be left open-eyed at the sea. If that’s the case, you have to dare to say: That’s how we are in the EU.
