Innsbruck (OTS) No matter who wins the vote today, the chairperson must reorganize the SPÖ – and form a unit once more. All but not easy tasks. If the integration of the camps does not succeed, the party abolishes itself.

In retrospect, it is comparatively easy to explain why Andreas Babler, Hans Peter Doskozil or Pamela Rendi-Wagner won the vote of the red party members. If the mayor of Traiskirch manages the surprise, then the party members want a fighter at the head of the party, someone who is passionate regarding his cause, someone who pursues pointed left-wing politics.
If the Burgenland governor can win the ballot, then, according to the interpretation, because the party members trust him to lead the SPÖ back to first place in the National Council elections. In Burgenland, he showed how you can conquer an absolute once morest all trends.
If Rendi-Wagner remains party leader, then in her case the concept of loyalty to an elected leader will play a central role in an analysis of the result. And their stayer qualities will be praised. It is also easy to explain defeats. Of course, Babler lacks the necessary pragmatism with regard to the National Council elections. Doskozil resents the cross shots once morest Rendi-Wagner – and thinks regarding his health. And Rendi-Wagner is simply assumed to have a lack of political flair and is accused of having a tight-rope mentality.
So why who loses or wins today is easy to explain. In retrospect. It becomes more problematic how the new chairperson or the (old) and new chairpersons are supposed to manage to reconcile the discord in the party.
Because today two large groups will be disappointed, injuries remain. It is up to the winner to act without malice and to make the losers an offer to cooperate. That sounds simple, but given the scorched earth, it’s complicated. Between the Doskozil camp and the Rendi-Wagner camp in particular, there is more than just mistrust. It’s true that Rendi-Wagner will leave politics in the event of a defeat, but the Liesinger game of Werner Faymann, Christian Deutsch and Doris Bures will remain. And the Viennese SPÖ would be damaged as a loser. On the other hand, if defeated, Doskozil will retreat to the Pannonian plains, but will the governor remain calm from now on? Barely. It would always be easier to build a bridge between Babler and Doskozil. But whatever. The SPÖ knows it well: If they don’t manage to demonstrate unity, they can happily continue the project of their self-destruction.
