Innsbruck (OTS) – GemNova failed economically, but in the end the mayors no longer had confidence in a renovation. The bankruptcy means a new beginning for them, also in the community association: without GemNova and President Ernst Schöpf.
The end of the service company GemNova becomes the beginning of a long overdue and relentless review. Many mayors were not willing to allow their 100 percent subsidiary an uncertain future with little information. So they acted according to an old wisdom of the indigenous Dakota in the USA: “If you discover that you are riding a dead horse, get off.” The consequence, however, is bankruptcy and an initially weakened community association as a community interest group vis-à-vis politics.
From the CEO of GemNova, who has already been fired and who receives a gross annual salary of 240,000 euros, to the municipal association presidium and the board of directors, the coming weeks and months will be regarding the nitty gritty. Why might GemNova go so far, how was the accumulation of debts of around ten million euros possible, who checked too little and who didn’t look at all? Who is liable, who may be personally included in the drawing? In any case, it is axiomatic that at the community association company many numbers were calculated and the problems downplayed. The parallels to the also heavily indebted market town of Matrei in Osttirol, which, however, was not allowed to go bankrupt, are obvious.
The GemNova is also driving the community association close to the abyss. And with Ernst Schöpf, he mercilessly drags along one of the most powerful and prominent politicians in the country. The GemNova was his baby, whom he defended until the very end, when there was really nothing left to defend. In doing so, he increasingly accepted a burgeoning loss of trust because the mayors no longer accepted a “sponge over the head” policy. Because of the state liability necessary for the GemNova renovation, they did not want to be tied down by the state government for years, but wanted to become a self-confident lobby once more. Finally, the intra-Tyrol financial equalization will soon have to be negotiated with the state, such as the financing of childcare or the hospitals.
Up until the GemNova debacle, Ernst Schöpf was a challenging negotiating partner – keyword agricultural communities – but also a reliable one. The terrifying end enables the community association to make a fresh start. Without GemNova and Schöpf. The mayor of Sölden would have deserved a different farewell following 14 years at the head of the community association, but he is largely responsible for his early retirement.
