TIROLER TAGESZEITUNG “Editorial” issue from Saturday, July 1, 2023, by Christain Jentsch: “A storm is brewing over Europe”

Innsbruck (OTS) – Europe wants to arm itself in view of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, in view of the impending confrontation between the USA and China and in view of the climate crisis. And fails once more and once more.

Despite the summer temperatures, the mood in political Brussels is chilled. And it is not only in the heart of the EU that optimism has evaporated. In many places in Europe there is fear of a new world in which things might get quite stormy. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Cold War has returned. The pillars of the order established following the collapse of the Soviet Union have faltered. Confrontation, isolation and containment instead of rapprochement are the new slogans.
The war is back in Europe and with it the insecurity, mistrust, fear, confrontation, rearmament, the risky game of escalation. Kremlin chief Putin is not only leaving behind scorched earth in Ukraine, he has also dug deep trenches with Europe and led his own country to the brink of the abyss. And most observers in Brussels assume that the spook will not end quickly. Russia’s attack is a major turning point for a Europe that believed it had long since overcome the wars.
Not only Russia’s aggression makes Europe tremble. Now that the Corona crisis has been overcome, the bad news of the escalating climate crisis and the unresolved problems of migration movements are causing great uncertainty. Populists now see their hour has come. But time cannot be turned back.
Geopolitically, not only Putin’s war changed Europe and the world. The ever-escalating conflict between the established world power, the USA, and the emerging world power, China, which no longer wants to be content with the second tier, poses an immense danger. An armed conflict between the giants would result in a global catastrophe. Europe is still taking cover, but the warnings regarding strategic rival China are getting louder despite all the economic ties.
In any case, one thing became clear: understanding globalization as a one-way street towards Westernization has turned out to be an illusion. The foundations of the old world order have cracked and a new one is not yet in sight. And the transition threatens to be anything but peaceful.
In view of the many dangers and crises in the EU, new unity has recently been invoked. But apart from support for Ukraine, solidarity in the EU seems to have narrow limits. The EU summit that ended yesterday also failed because of the dispute over a common asylum policy. A spirit of optimism is probably the wrong word.
