Innsbruck (OTS) Traveling on public transport is more sustainable. But how much loss of comfort are we willing to accept?

Recent waves of complaints regarding overcrowded buses show that there is a willingness to use them. To scare that away would be fatal.

First the good news: Many people buy the Austria-wide climate ticket (as of August 2023: 238,000). And in Tyrol, the number of VVT annual tickets sold has skyrocketed from 132,000 to 160,000 (excluding student tickets) within the last two years. In general, it appears that many Tyroleans are open to alternatives to cars: According to a recent survey by the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ), 47 percent of people here make their everyday journeys on foot, by bike and by public transport. It is said that the potential for more car-free mobility is great in Tyrol. In addition, more and more companies are paying their employees the KlimaTicket Tirol (from October 1st, for example the Tirol Kliniken).

The bad news is that there has recently been a real wave of complaints – from Innsbruck to municipalities – regarding overcrowded public transport. In principle, full buses and trains would be a good thing. On the one hand from a business point of view, on the other hand the CO2 balance improves the more people do without a car. But nothing scares users away more than overcrowded public transport, long waiting times, missing connections (in the evening), cancellations and timetables that are not coordinated. In a way, public transport seems to be falling victim to its own success (climate ticket, expansion). You have to react quickly here. There is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to managing utilization. At the same time, the job of bus drivers and train crews must finally be designed in such a way that it is worth working here. If that doesn’t work, many will get back into the car. Because it’s more convenient. Even if it doesn’t look good to be stuck in a traffic jam on the highway to work early in the morning, even in an electric car.
