Innsbruck (OTS) No consumption-free places in public spaces, a dying club scene, back and forth around a grid. Innsbruck wanted to be a “finally cosmopolitan city” – and it is not just turning into a province for young people.

The Innsbruck election campaign hasn’t even started yet (or has it?), and there is already the first issue that is really coming to the fore. One has to wonder where the sudden interest of some factions comes from when it comes to using the wall on the banks of the Inn near the university. Because the shadows over the sun deck have been there for a long time. The ball is passed back and forth not only when it comes to seating and the grid. The sun deck symbolizes how we deal with consumption-free space for young people in our country. The commitment that some politicians on Instagram and Facebook are now suddenly showing in this case is something we would like to see at a higher level for squares, the club scene and the distribution in public spaces. On the wall, in wait… following a few votes.
The Sonnendeck event series started in 2013 with a few tables, a DJ booth and two speakers. A handful turned into 2,000 visitors who celebrated on the promenade with free entry and no pressure to consume. And the area somehow took its name from the event. The more people, the more problems – noise, garbage, complaints from neighbors. In June 2022, an event was canceled – politicians remained largely silent. Even back then, the wall was the problem at the registered event. A situation that has not changed to this day. And the sun deck was completely canceled in the summer of 23 due to construction work. Another less space. Another less opportunity for young people to meet. All of this in a city that would like to be a cosmopolitan city, but in this respect remains a deep province. Innsbruck’s youth and cultural scene has to watch from the sea wall as one club following another goes down the Inn. The last remaining open spaces are barricaded. Given these facts, is anyone else surprised that illegal parties are regularly held in the Sillschlucht?
None of these problems are new. On the contrary. If a demo is formed today that wants to point out the dwindling space for young people, then it is something like the last cry for help before the city finally degenerates into a silent, concrete block.
Solutions are needed – not just for sitting on the sun deck. What is finally needed is a clear commitment and projects to public space and its use for young people. Even if there is no election coming up.
