Innsbruck (OTS) – The results of the parties in Carinthia are primarily of a local nature. But some things also affect the federal government.
The internal opponents of SPÖ federal party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner have received new material.
After those in Tyrol and Lower Austria, the Carinthian election was also defeated. In some cases, it has not brought the results that were predicted. The SPÖ remains number 1 by far, but has lost massively, the desired “fourth in front” was not achieved. The FPÖ has gained little compared to the previous elections, the ÖVP, contrary to the forecasts, has gained and has not fallen behind the “Team Carinthia”. This has increased, although not as much as prophesied. Greens and NEOS did not make it into the state parliament. All of this shows that it was above all a local election – with local phenomena.
Like the former ÖVPer Fritz Dinkhauser in Tyrol, the former SPÖler Gerhard Köfer was successful in Carinthia. His group had something for everyone on the political shelf. Many have accessed. And: Carinthia is not good terrain for greens and pinks, who score in cities.
For the SPÖ, the result in the south has a supraregional effect. It provides the internal adversaries of federal party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner with more material, even if Peter Kaiser will probably remain governor, had admitted his own mistakes before the election and took responsibility for the big minus.
The ÖVP had one in Lower Austria at the end of January, and they are all the more excited now. So much so that party leader Karl Nehammer came to Carinthia to celebrate. But he shouldn’t believe that his government work has contributed to the prosperity of the state party – and that the federal party is on the up once more. Martin Gruber prevented the lowest point in the state; he was the underrated candidate.
For the future elections – the next one is in Salzburg – the blue ones should not be underestimated. The fact that there was only a small bonus in Carinthia does not mean that the freedom movement is over in Austria. They had a strong competitor in Carinthia in Gerhard Köfer and a weak top man in Erwin Angerer. Not even the blatant Herbert Kickl might make up for that.
The party representatives do not have time to catch their breath. Already on April 23 there will be elections in Salzburg. Things are looking good for the FPÖ there, the ÖVP has to defend the governor.
The Social Democrats are also threatened with hardship in this ballot in Salzburg. After that, they have to clarify their personal situation in the federal government – provided they have found a powerful candidate by then.
