The weak polls remain the only coalition cement for the ÖVP and the Greens. Hardly anything can be expected in terms of content, but there is still more than a year of campaigning.
Innsbruck (OTS) – Austria’s domestic policy is always good for surprises, all too often, unfortunately, for negative ones. Think of the Ibiza or various chat and corruption scandals in the recent past. After the ÖVP under Sebastian Kurz had used up the SPÖ and FPÖ as partners (they mightn’t or didn’t want to work together anymore), the absolute premiere of the coalition with the Greens took place.
It was anything but a love marriage, if there should ever be one in politics. Two partners found each other who are extremely far apart in terms of content on many issues. The “best of both worlds” was announced in political marketing jargon. It never was, even if agreements were reached on various, even very difficult issues (from getting out of cold progression, expanding public transport to nursing or euthanasia). Shortly following the start Corona came and you were chained together in crisis mode. And is that with a view to the Ukraine war and the inflation actually until today.
The fact that two parties of all people, which are so unfriendly in terms of content, have been able to hold out at least almost to the end of the legislative period since 1945, in contrast to most governments, has nothing to do with the allegedly still so many tasks that still have to be done. It is just a look at the polls where Herbert Kickl’s FPÖ is clearly in first place. The prospect of having to join a coalition with him or the SPÖ under Andreas Babler as a possible junior partner or even join the opposition (especially the Greens) allows the coalition members to continue. Even if there is (almost) nothing going on in terms of content and the mutual unfriendliness continues to accumulate. An overly long election campaign has long since begun in all parties.
