Innsbruck (OTS) – The importance of tourism for economic stability in Tyrol continues to be enormous. This is far too often forgotten in everyday life. Meanwhile, the challenges for the industry in the coming years are enormous.
The beds are full. The forecasts are good. And now it’s not just the ski slopes that are white anymore. Tyrol’s tourism is once once more proving to be a stable cushion for the local economy in times of crisis. Despite all the prophecies of doom from the past. In public discourse, the importance of tourism for the country and its people is all too often made smaller than it is in reality. For the country and especially for many people who live here, tourism is and remains the lifeline.
However, this stable economic cushion is not a resting pillow. On the contrary. As important as it is, so are the challenges in the future. Climate change, inflation, labor shortages, dwindling acceptance among locals, traffic congestion – the problems are often diverse, complex and sometimes impossible to solve yourself. An individual company can do little regarding the general price increases.
What can definitely be improved is to better emphasize the importance of tourism. It starts at the regulars’ table and with us in the media and ends with the complaining in the industry – which is always the same loud, no matter how good or bad things are going. And at the same time, we have to work seriously and sustainably on the consequences of tourism for people. One example that comes to mind is the people along the transit routes in the Ausserfern who have nothing to do with the holidaymakers who pile up on every square centimeter of asphalt on the weekends. The tourists just drive through – and don’t leave a single euro behind. And the fact that not all holidaymakers should arrive on Saturday in order to ease the mega traffic jams has been talked regarding for decades.
Tyrol’s tourism not only has many challenges in the future, but also a lot of potential. For example, when it comes to focusing on sustainable holidays. This requires courage and a strong awareness that, alongside people in tourism, nature is the most important resource we have. But we can’t rest on our laurels any longer.
