Innsbruck (OTS) Donald Trump, ex-president and presidential candidate for next year’s election, has to face charges of conspiracy. His policies have deeply divided the United States. And his dangerous game continues.

When an angry mob stormed the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, the whole world rubbed its eyes in amazement. Radical Trump supporters, who did not want to accept the defeat of their idol in the 2020 presidential election, beat their way into the heart of US democracy, egged on by the unselected but still incumbent president.

It was an attempt at a coup d’etat. And that in the center of the USA, which has always seen itself as the leading power and anchor of the western liberal world. Donald Trump, who lost the election, did not want to accept his defeat and would do anything to stay in power. In doing so, he opposed the principle of the peaceful, democratic transfer of power.

Even if Trump and his supporters finally had to leave the field and he is now being charged with conspiracy two and a half years following the storming of the Capitol, deep cracks remain in the foundation of US democracy. And the rifts in US society are threatening to deepen.

It is sobering that Trump’s Republicans, as the state-supporting party, still do not want to distance themselves from him and his freak show. And the fact that an accusation of conspiracy does not finally push the 77-year-old offside politically gives us a bad idea.
Trump is held in high esteem not just by his closest supporters, but by the entire Republican electorate. His inner-party competitors – including Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis – are far behind. As things stand at present, Trump has little to fear in the upcoming primaries.

The fact that he is now being targeted by the judiciary in numerous cases seems to be less a curse than a blessing for Trump. He simply reverses the argument and sells himself as a victim of a government and political establishment conspiracy.

With each new indictment, Trump feels a tailwind in large parts of the Republican camp. The blustering ex-president clearly cannot be dissuaded from his goal of moving back into the White House. In recent polls, he is almost level with the fading incumbent Democratic US President Joe Biden.

Challenging times lie ahead for the US ahead of the 2024 presidential election. New attacks on US democracy seem inevitable.
