Reading time: 2 min — Spotted on Wired
Smartphones are getting bigger and bigger; them batteries also, allowing a better autonomy. And even if their lifespan is no longer as worrying as it was some time ago, the anxiety of being flattened is still present. So if you want to avoid finding yourself in this situation, Wired gives you some tips.
First: activate the “energy saving” mode. That functionalityalthough relatively well known, is ideal for preserving the precious autonomy of your battery. Among other things, it pauses and limits some of your device’s activities and visual effects. Enough to save precious minutes when you don’t have a charger on hand.
Still in the category of useful but too little used tricks: changing the brightness of thescreen. While some prefer to set it manually, others will opt for the automatic feature. You can also save battery by activating dark mode if your smartphone has an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display.
It can also be useful to schedule regular downtime on your telephone using “Do Not Disturb” mode. Setting a time when notifications are limited can, beyond helping you sleep or concentrate, preserve the autonomy of your mobile.
The collective myths
This myth has persisted for far too many years: no, continually closing the applications open does not save battery power. In fact, you may even wear it out more. The apps that appear in your activity bar have actually been paused by your phone, so you can resume browsing where you left off. So leave them open: reloading them from scratch will take moreenergy.
Another preconceived idea: deactivating Bluetooth is not an obligation. Wrongly, some people think that this feature consumes a lot of battery. But as long as your portable is not connected to another device, it is not.
Same for wifi. Enabling this feature has less impact on your phone’s battery life. So turning it on and off is frankly not worth it. Additionally, it will allow your device to switch between network 4G or 5G, which generally requires more energy, to a wi-fi network as soon as it is available.
