As the 2023 summer holidays approach, the Belgian federal agency for the safety of the food chain (Afsca) is attracting the attention of travellers. And especially pet owners.
”Anyone taking their pet on holiday abroad is required to vaccinate it once morest rabies. And this, even for a short stay in France or the Netherlands, for example”, recalls Afsca.
Indeed, rabies is still present in many tourist destinations. So be extremely careful with stray dogs and cats abroad! “If you are traveling to an exotic destination, avoid petting any stray animal you come across on the street. You risk contracting rabies if an infected animal bites, scratches or licks you.”
Also, never bring an animal home just like that. As noble as this gesture may seem, you are putting your own pets, your children and yourself in great danger.
Also be aware that it can take up to four months before the animal can legally come to Belgium.
