The smell of roasted almonds, tree cakes, gingerbread and punch in your nose is – it just has to be said – magical! Every year, this very special atmosphere in the run-up to Christmas transforms tired into sparkling eyes, cool moments into comfortably warm moments and evenings into a sparkling sea of lights. And every year, the most beautiful time of the year immerses the region of Upper Styria around Mariazellerland, around Kapfenberg, Mürzzuschlag, Bruck and Co into a cozy Advent stronghold. How can you really spend December at over 40 Christmas markets here? Take a look and read on! Here are our tips for your Advent in Upper Styria.
Mariazeller Advent
The most wonderful time of the year feels particularly festive in this pilgrimage site. The picturesque backdrop of the basilica, whose first stone was laid in 1157, gives the community a really beautiful glow in winter. But as tranquil as the town of 3,000 people seems, in the run-up to Christmas it becomes one of the most sparkling places in the country with the largest traditional Christmas market in Austria. For the 23rd time, the Mariazeller Advent invites you to punch and chat with over 60 lovingly decorated stalls. You can find great handicraft products, the famous gingerbread and more regional specialties. Also listen to the Advent concerts by Stella Jones & The Golden Gospel Singers, the three Innviertel Tenors, Wolfgang Niegelhell with his pan flute and many others. A literally big highlight is the largest Advent wreath in the world, which hangs over the fountain in the main square. And anyone who comes to Mariazell with their children will be happy regarding the fine offerings from the Children’s Advent.

Mountain Advent at Stuhleck
Anyone who is not only looking for a sparkle in their eyes in the run-up to Christmas, but also wants to enjoy sparkling, beautiful views with a view of the valley, should definitely come to the mountain Advent at Stuhleck. In mid-December, at 1,640 meters above sea level, the mountain station of the Weißenelfbahn with the glittering lantern forest is transformed into a Christmas village for young and old. This Christmas market is the highest in Styria and welcomes you with live music, culinary delicacies, nativity scene carvings and stalls with bonnet knitting, lace making, steel art, storytellers, ice art and an elf workshop. Anyone who is up here close to the sky and the stars has to go down once more – even if reluctantly. You can get into the valley (and of course up the mountain) in a relaxed manner with the Stuhleckbahn and Weißenelfbahn. If you prefer to make your own descent, you can ski down the floodlit torchlight descent.
The most important information:
- Mountain Advent at Stuhleck on December 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m
- Ascent and descent with the Stuhleckbahn and Weißenelfbahn, last descent at 8 p.m

Advent in Bruck, Mürzzuschlag and Kapfenberg
There is also a lot going on before Christmas in the cities of Upper Styria. The main square in Bruck an der Mur is transformed into an atmospheric Bruck Forest Christmas on the four Advent weekends. Styrian specialties, an entertainment program for children and a ride on the Brucker slow train are all worth it. Tip if you want to explore Bruck on foot: On a city tour during Advent you can see the illuminated Kornmesserstadt from its most beautiful side. If you want to experience the pre-Christmas season in Mürzzuschlag, you will find a wonderful Christmas market at Adventplatzl. From the predominantly private exhibitors you can get honey, mulled wine, liqueurs, regional crafts and hear Christmas sounds while listening to the traditional Advent bubbles. Finally, we would like to recommend the Christmas market in Kapfenberg’s old town. On four Advent weekends you can sip lots of cookies, sip punch and listen to great musical performances. If you stay longer in Kapfenberg, you shouldn’t miss New Year’s Eve on the main square with the Full Supa Band.
The most important information:
- Bruck Forest Christmas on the four Advent weekends from Thursday to Sunday
- Mürzzuschlager Adventplatzl: November 30th to December 23rd
- Christmas market in Kapfenberg on the four Advent weekends including December 23rd from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m
