Tiny Houses for Professional Cocoons: A Cosy and Discreet Environment

Tiny houses, these pocket houses on wheels, are not the prerogative of adventurers in search of freedom. You can sleep there, of course, and why not also arrange them in professional cocoons.

This dream come true, Valentine Van Ryckeghem cherished it for two years. A psychologist in Tournai for 7 years, the young 34-year-old independent decided to take the plunge a few months ago by having a tiny house built. A real upheaval in his career, following having worked in a cabinet on the Chaussée de Lille with a somewhat impersonal character and without a window.

The contrast is striking with his charming tiny house, which has taken up residence in a green setting on rue Albert Mille in Pecq.

A cosy, reassuring and discreet environment

It is in this soothing setting, open to nature and tastefully decorated, that Valentine Van Ryckeghem has received her patients for consultation since mid-July. “I felt this need to be more connected to the environment, to the sun, to natural light…I was also looking for calm and a certain intimacy, which was not possible in my old office where the waiting room was shared with other freelancers,” says the psychologist and sexologist, a graduate of UCLouvain.

The click happened a bit by chance, following reading an article in a magazine regarding light housing. “We were talking regarding it as a credible alternative to placing elderly people in nursing homes.

However, the bet was far from won in advance for the citizen of Mont-de-l’Enclus, who had to find a specialized company, land to rent and above all a municipality that agreed to host her project. We know the persistent reluctance of some agents with regard to yurts, trailers and other tiny houses.

“I had the opportunity to settle in Warchin (Tournai) but the scale of the work to be done on the plot put me off. Then, a meeting with the mayor of Pecq was decisive because he helped to find a green space suited to my aspirations, and not requiring any particular development”, explains Valentine Van Ryckeghem, who obtained the planning permit last month.

Anxious to promote the local entrepreneurial fabric, the psychologist entrusted the construction of her atypical place of consultations to Hérinnois Dominique Duhayon, of the company Seretiny Construct. Just under six months elapsed between the order and the structure leaving the workshop.

Covering an area of 16 m2, Valentine’s wooden frame tiny house has been specially adapted to her professional practice. The interior space is equipped with a dry toilet, a kitchen area and a cabinet offering a bubble of well-being and disconnection to people to whom the psychologist-sexologist lends an attentive ear.

Its approach is centered on the solutions that will allow them to find the resources necessary for their development (personal, professional or romantic).

“When arranging the premises, I wanted to create a cozy atmosphere, in particular by favoring materials close to nature (wooden furniture). It is essential that patients who seek to overcome their psychological and relational difficulties… feel good and can speak freely.

We live in a hyperconnected society marked by constant pressure, where we always ask more of people. If I can bring greater serenity to the patients I accompany, for an hour, thanks to this environment linked to nature, that gives more meaning to my work. “

From the sofa where citizens talk regarding their bad times, the room bathed in light thanks to two large bay windows is conducive to alleviating ailments. Turning your head, you can even see, from time to time, Valentine’s animals (chickens, pigs, etc.) walking around in the enclosure installed at the back of the site.

“The glazed spaces have been deliberately placed so that there is no vis-à-vis the street. Discretion is an important element because people do not necessarily want to be seen when they go to their psychologist or sexologist”, underlines the mental health professional, who is teeming with projects, such as the realization of a waiting room, a terrace at the back in order to welcome her patients. summer or even the installation of solar panels on the roof of the tiny house.
