Tiny barcodes etched into iPhone screens to verify production

Apple puts very small barcodes on the screen of iPhones in order to monitor the default rate of its suppliers, reports The Information. No need to take out your magnifying glass to see these tattoos, they are invisible to the naked eye in addition to being located in different places on each screen.

The smallest code, which is the size of a grain of sand, is made up of 625 laser-engraved points. The other is located on the inside of the screen, along the frame. This barcode system was introduced in 2020 to control the quality of production by Lens Technology and Biel Crystal, two Apple subcontractors who shape the glass primarily produced by Corning.

Thanks to this careful inspection, the rate of glass thrown away due to manufacturing anomalies went from three in ten to just one in ten, says The Information. Ultimately, this represents several hundred million dollars saved for Apple, since it pays for the entire production.

This control of production using mini-codes is not new at Apple or even in the industry; other components of the iPhone have been discreetly marked for years.
