Tina Turner feared her son Ronnie was following in the footsteps of his abusive father Ike Turner.
Afida Turner, wife of Ronnie Turner, said Tina, whose May 24 death was attributed to “natural causes”, was so haunted by Ike’s brutality that she confided in her stepdaughter that Ron was in danger of “becoming like his father”.
Afida revealed to the Daily Mail: “Tina would sometimes say to me, ‘You don’t want to stay with him. He’s going to become like his father.’
Ike died of an overdose in 2007, aged 76, following tormenting Tina physically, verbally and mentally for years.
Ike abused Tina so much that she tried to kill herself in 1986 by swallowing 50 sleeping pills.
The French-born singer Afida added that at the start of her relationship with Ronnie, he was showing worrying signs.
She said: “At first he was a bit like his father, but following that he was fine. He tried very hard to keep me. At first it was very difficult because I didn’t want to stay. with him”.
Ronnie was described by Afida as a “heavy drinker” when they first met, but she clarified that she made him “stop drinking and go to the gym”, adding that he was “very well” before his death.
Ronnie succumbed to complications from colon cancer a few months before his mother died, aged 62.
