At noon on Saturday, an hour-long procession of vintage vehicles passed through Haapsalu, which has always been one of the attractions of the retro weekend. Even now, the vehicles, all of which were from the last century, attracted large crowds to the streets, although the beautiful weather also played its part.
For several years, retro vehicles started their journey from the Vasikaholm parking lot. The band Vares, which started the Vintage Weekend Saturday program at the castle square, did not finish the first song when the first marchers already arrived at the castle square. Perhaps the fast ride is explained by the fact that the circuit motorcycle with the side basket that arrived in front is still a competition motorcycle and is used to fast driving.
As usual, smaller vehicles rode at the head of the procession – bicycles, motorcycles and vars, or leg shakers, although there were more of them for the parade later and some riders rode in front of the crowd.
While in the first years the procession consisted mainly of vehicles manufactured in the Soviet Union – Zaporozhets, Zhiguls, Moskvichs, Nivas, Volgas and even some Chaika -, over the years the picture has become much more colorful. On this occasion too, there were quite a lot of Western-made cars in the parade, from big and eye-catching Americans to tiny Polish-made Fiats. There were also Volkswagen bumpers, Trabantes, Citroëns and other brands of vehicles. If some cars with a later release year are still in daily use, the oldest vehicles that participated in the parade are already more than a hundred years old.
Among the cars, a Kirovets tractor, several trucks, one of which was particularly ostentatious with a magnificent mustache, and the Järva-Jaani rescue vehicle were also present.
Next to Estonians, Latvians and Finns came to Vintage Weekend to show their vehicles.
Afterwards, those who wished could take a closer look at the vehicles that participated in the parade. The largest and most magnificent of them were displayed in the castle grounds, but most of the vehicles were accommodated in Krahviaeda, where they occupied most of the green area between the tennis courts and the children’s art school.
