Sammy Basso’s death in Rainews announced and mourned by all of Italy. Sammy, who is considered a celebrity and lives with progeria syndrome, died unexpectedly in a restaurant. Basso recently returned home from a trip to China, of which he took pictures on his Instagram page also shared with his followers.
Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome (HGPS), is an extremely rare genetic disease that causes accelerated aging, with an untreated life expectancy of about 13.5 years. The disease affects only one in 20 million people.
Sammy Basso was born in the northern Italian town of Schio in 1995 and was diagnosed with progeria when he was just two years old. Nevertheless, he devoted his life to researching his disease and working to develop therapies that could slow its progression. In 2018, he graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Padua, where he wrote a thesis on the development of therapies related to progeria.
Sammy Basso was known and loved not only in Italy, but also internationally, and through his media appearances, he managed to make his story known to many people. He was also featured in a National Geographic documentary that chronicled his journey across the United States on Route 66. In 2019, he underwent heart surgery to correct an abnormality in his aorta – a unique case for a progeria patient. After the operation, Sergio Mattarella, the President of Italy, made him a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, recognizing Sammy’s courage and perseverance.
Sammy will major in molecular biology at the same university in 2021, hoping to contribute to progeria research and the development of new treatments. The Italian Progeria Association released an emotional message on his death, thanking him for his life and perseverance.
