Time in Jazz, Paolo Fresu re-interprets «A Love Supreme»

A Love Supreme it is unquestionably John Coltrane’s masterpiece, the record with which Hamlet’s saxophonist brought jazz to something higher, pure, transcendent. A supreme love, an absolute form of the most feeling of all. Time in Jazz, the festival created and directed by Paolo Fresu, whose 37th edition will take place from 8 to 16 August between the trumpeter’s hometown, Berchidda, and other centers in northern Sardinia, wants to go in that direction. Fifteen those involved this year: Arzachena, Banari, Bortigiadas, Budoni, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Luogosanto, Oschiri, Ozieri, Porto Rotondo, Posada, Puntaldia, San Teodoro, Tempio Pausania, Tula, Viddalba.

A Love Supreme it is “a hymn to universal love and peace as well as an invocation to the Divine that goes beyond the sacred and aspires to connect the creative inspiration with the unknown through a secular prayer made of sound and melody, singing and silence”, he explains Fresu. «Theme tense between past and future to underline, especially in this difficult moment of conflicts and barriers, how much the human heart must always beat in unison, yearning for supreme love, capable of making us all equal».

Once once more, there is a large cast of musicians on the bill, with international jazz names such as the saxophonist Kenny Garrett, the trumpeter Theo Croker, the pianist Omar Sosa expected in a duo with Paolo Fresu; and, among the Italians, Roberto Gatto, Francesco Bearzatti, Nicola Stilo, Furio Di Castri, Tino Tracanna, Glauco Venier, Gianrico Manca; lots of jazz but also other sounds and other voices with Vinicio Capossela, Nicola Conte, Chiara Civello, Francesca Gaza, Olivia Trummer, Mauro Campobasso and Mauro Manzoni; and then the Spiritus project by Maurizio Camardi, Sergio Cossu and Mauro Palmas, the Drops by Tino Tracanna, Bonnot and Roberto Cecchetto, the homage to Fabrizio De André by Neri Marcorè, Scarlet Rivera and Borderlobo, and the musical reading on Collodi’s Pinocchio with Lella Costa, Paolo Fresu and Glauco Venier; breath to the brass instruments, however, with the musical parades of the Rusty Brass and with the «Bernardo De Muro» band from Berchidda; sounds between tradition and innovation with Pierpaolo Vacca’s accordion and his guests in the post-concert space, and more music with Renton’s DJ sets and with the FestivalBar, the showcase of groups and soloists on stage in the Berchiddesi bars.

Lots of music, therefore, from morning to night, but also exhibitions, book presentations and meetings with the authors, the screening of the film Berchidda Livetaken from materials from the Time in Jazz archive, the activities for boys and girls from the usual Time to Children program, and more, will be the ingredients of the rich program next August.
