Saint Joseph’s Names Tim Mulqueen New Men’s Soccer Head Coach
Saint Joseph’s University is ushering in a new era for its men’s soccer program, welcoming back an alumnus to lead the Hawks into the future. Tim Mulqueen, a standout goalkeeper during his playing days and accomplished coach with experience at the highest levels of the sport, will take the reins of the program, announced Vice President and Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner.
“We have found the perfect leader for our men’s soccer program in St. Joe’s Men’s Soccer Hall of Famer Tim Mulqueen,” stated Bodensteiner. “Tim is the full package—he is a leader who understands the importance of establishing a great culture; he has a wealth of soccer experience at every level; and his love for his alma mater will inspire past, current, and future Hawks.”
Mulqueen, a 1988 graduate of Saint Joseph’s, expressed his excitement about rejoining the university.
“I am ecstatic to be back at Saint Joseph’s to lead the men’s soccer program. I am grateful to Jill Bodensteiner for giving me this opportunity to return to Hawk Hill, to the university that I owe my career to and the program that I deeply love,” said Mulqueen. “Under the leadership of Jill and Ken Krimmel and with the support of alumni, I believe we can reignite a winning program that makes our community proud.”
Mulqueen comes to Hawk Hill with more than three decades of coaching experience at the highest levels. He has coached some of the biggest names in U.S. soccer history, working with the United States Soccer Federation as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team and youth national teams. His international experience includes stints coaching the 2008 Olympic team in Beijing and multiple youth World Cup teams.
His coaching resume also boasts extensive professional experience, serving as the inaugural head coach of USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC. Mulqueen built the program from the ground up, leading all aspects of the team, from hiring staff and managing the roster to scouting and player development stations throughout his tenure. He was dedicated to community engagement, actively participating in outreach programs and events.
Before Memphis, Mulqueen honed his coaching skills at various levels. He began his career in 1996 as an assistant coach with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and later joined the Kansas City Wizards, leading them to both the MLS Cup Championship in 2000 and the U.S. Open Cup title in 2004.
He continued to build his expertise as an assistant coach with Orlando City SC in 2017 before landing the head coaching role at Memphis 901 FC. He began his coaching journey at Rutgers (1988–94), participating in NCAA Final Four runs in 1989, 1990, and 1994.
Mulqueen’s connection to Saint Joseph’s runs deep. While here, he earned the title of team MVP twice, leaving his mark on the program. Upon graduation, he went on to play professionally with the New Jersey Eagles, Penn-Jersey Spirit, and New York/New Jersey MetroStars (1988–97). He was inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Men’s Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017, cementing his legacy as an influential figure in the program’s history.
A native of Fords, New Jersey, Mulqueen earned his bachelor’s degree in history. With his impressive resume as both a player and a coach, he is well-equipped to guide the Hawks to success, raising the program to national prominence.
