Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a special message to two Apple users who had their lives saved thanks to a health feature on the Apple Watch, which often makes headlines for similar feats. Both clients went to the emergency room following the Electrocardiogram (ECG) feature identified cardiac anomalies.

One of the users who received contact from Maçã’s executive director was Michael Gallegos, from Wichita, in the state of Kansas (USA), who received an alert regarding a low heart rate for more than 10 minutes from his Watch. He and his son — a relative registered as a security contact in the settings — were notified by the watch regarding the irregular heartbeats.

When looking for the hospital, Gallegos was diagnosed with chronic heart disease and underwent surgery to install a pacemaker in his heart., a device that treats heart rhythm disorders. “I would never have known. He would never have known. I probably would have died in my sleep,” said the patient.

Gallegos’ son Nick sent an email to Cook telling his story and thanking him for the watch’s existence. Cook then returned following a few hours with the following message:

Oi Nick,

I’m so glad your father sought medical attention and received the treatment he needed. Thank you very much for sharing your story with us.

I hope you get better

In another recent case, a user identified as Christopher Oakely, from North Carolina (USA), had a heart attack diagnosed by doctors following the team considered measurements taken by the watch intelligent. He underwent surgery to install a saphenous bypass to improve blood flow in the heart.

Oakely also sent an email to Apple’s CEO thanking him for creating a device that not only tells the time, but also saves lives. Cook returned with the following response:

CChristopher

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I’m so glad you got the treatment you needed.

Be fine.

This is not the first time that the Apple Watch has been able to identify heart problems. The Cupertino giant’s smart wearable brings together a series of reports of people saved thanks to the device. However, it is important to remember that the clock is not the only parameter used for diagnosis, so it is important to always seek emergency assistance.

Heart attack symptoms (according to the Ministry of Health):

The main symptom is pain or discomfort in the pectoral region, which can radiate to the back, face, left arm and, rarely, the right arm. This discomfort is usually intense and prolonged, accompanied by a feeling of heaviness or tightness in the chest. These signs are often accompanied by cold sweat, paleness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of fainting.

In the elderly, the main symptom may be shortness of breath. The pain may also be in the abdomen, similar to the pain of gastritis or reflux esophagitis, but this is uncommon. In diabetics and the elderly, a heart attack can occur without specific signs. Therefore, one must be aware of any sudden discomfort experienced by these patients.
