Tilos in focus for the rescue operation which was completed with complete success, with the 50-day-old refugee child being transported safely.
Tilos is watching the images of the related business make the rounds on the internet. The mobilization took place for a refugee baby just 50 days old, who was trapped on a rocky island and was in danger. Tthe little angel drank milk with sea water for three days. Now the baby is clean, dry and above all in a safe environment. Together with his parents, in a hotel on the island. With those who paid the traffickers for the coveted trip to Greece, with the latter taking the money and leaving them stranded on a rocky island.
The excitement of public opinion was great, especially for the Cretan porter Yiannis Koufakis, who participated in the rescue. He, in a post on Facebook, referred to the incident and gave credit to his colleagues, writing: “I think we did the obvious and nothing more… it’s all about being HUMAN with empathy! At least that’s how I learned.”
Referring to the widely circulated baby rescue photo, he noted: “Regarding the baby rescue photo which I see is being circulated at great speed let me say two things… first of all thank you all for the wonderful words your! You move me and give me strength to continue because it is not easy at all to be away from your children and loved ones for so long…
His sister also made an emotional post on Facebook, writing: “His name is Giannis and he is a Coast Guard. He’s not wearing a uniform because he obviously wasn’t on duty, you’re on duty there 24 hours a day. He also has a baby who has been called daddy for two months now… He also has a mother who reads every day that porters are drowning people in the Aegean…
I don’t feel proud of my brother, he did the obvious, what anyone who wants to be called human would do! I feel angry that I live in a world where babies have to be saved from boats and vindicated that all sacrifices are worth it when you save a Life! Welcome baby to our wonderful world! Welcome Giannis Koufakis to your family.”
OR the mayor of Tilos, Maria Kamma, said goodbye to little Iona with the following emotional post: “Calm, safe, dry, clean, properly fed, watching everyone and everything around him… Be lucky our little one and life from here on out won’t be so cruel and unfair to you… Have a good trip our little Jonah and we hope that tomorrow will not be your last day on our island…”.
The 50-day-old baby was given the “name” Jonah, likening the little refugee child to the monk who washed up in Tilos and built the monastery of Agios Panteleimon. As Maria Kamma reports, once again the community of Tilos is rising to the occasion, putting its back to the great pressure exerted with the refugee.
The mayor of Tilos refers to the superhuman efforts of the few harbor guards and policemen who have exceeded the limits of their endurance and also the volunteers. “Spyros, Mimi, Nikos, Maria, Vassilis, Michalis, Merkouris and several others, who don’t give up, who say no, damn it, we won’t lose anyone on our island!”, says Maria Kamma.
