”TILL”, the lynching of a black man in Mississippi

At the New York Film Festival in early October, among the stars who walked the green carpet was Whoopi Goldberg for the world premiere of ‘TILL’.

This film tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till, a 14 year old boy, lynched in 1955 in Mississippi accused of having flirted with a white woman in this segregationist state of the United States.

Whoopi Goldberg, has been at the heart of the project for decades. The starting point of his relationship with the film as an actor and producer, an invitation from the production team of Barbara Broccoli and Fred Zollo.

“I was asked to be part of the production team because I worked with the producers, Barbara Broccoli et fred zollo. They had worked on this project and asked me if I wanted to do it with them. And I said, “Sure. And it’s taken so long that I’ve gone from being a young woman with a kid to being a grandmother now. That’s how long it took us to get there.” happen.”, explains the actress.

In this race-themed production, Danielle Deadwyler embodies the role of Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of the teenager lynched in the southern United States. She shares in the film, her emotion as a mother.

“I didn’t know regarding their private lives. We know what the still image is like, the black and white of her crying or the black and white of being one of the lonely black people, but what was it like before? This film gives it to us It gives us the sibling, motherly dynamic and her and her son It gives us the love between her and Gene It shows us the relationship between her and her parents and the challenges they had to face in making the decision to leave,” she explains.

Jalyn Hall was chosen to play the role of Till. The actor did not hide his pleasure.

“As for learning more regarding Emmett as a character, I was shocked at the normalization. You know, a lot of people look at him as a historical figure, but never look at him as the 14-year-old kid he was, and it was a blast and awesome for me to portray that.”; said the actor.

It took 29 years to make the film.
