Objective: to reassure the European authorities. TikTok, engaged in a charm offensive, announced on Wednesday March 8 that its users’ data would be stored from this year in three centers, including two in Ireland and one in Norway. Currently, European user data is stored in Singapore and the United States, Elaine Fox, chief privacy officer for TikTok in Europe, told an online press briefing.

Faced with growing mistrust, the video app, owned by Chinese giant ByteDance, is working with a European partner company to ensure that this data is not transferred to China, similar to the measures taken in the United States.

The application banned by several institutions

This project called “Clover”, worth 1.2 billion euros and started six months ago, will also make it possible to restrict the access of TikTok employees to data, said Theo Bertram, vice-president in charge of public policies in Europe. “In the same way that we proceeded (…) in the United States, we will build a secure environment around this data to prevent access from outside the region”did he declare.

One of the social network’s global heads, Erich Andersen, general counsel for ByteDance, is touring Europe this week to address the criticism. He spoke with political leaders in Brussels, London, Paris, and must go to The Hague (Netherlands). TikTok is trying to allay the fears of Europeans and Americans, whose several governments and institutions such as the European Commission and Parliament have banned the app on the work phones of their civil servants.
