Multiple accounts on TikTok started posting complete films on the social network. The mechanism adopted to try to circumvent copyright legislation was to cut the films into pieces of up to three minutes and publish several parts on the platform.
As pointed out in a report by the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, several lawyers from Hollywood studios and law professors in the United States claim that the practice also constitutes copyright infringement.
Several posts with film cuts can be seen on social media. On TikTok, it has become common to find posts with captions like “Part 7”, without any additional information and not even the name of the feature film is announced.
Experts also warn that trying to hide the full name of films is not enough to stop being a copyright violation. Also according to the report, the majority of posts on TikTok are not monetized.
In turn, TikTok claims to prohibit the posting of content protected by copyright and says it has tools so that material owners can report any violations of their productions for the publications to be removed.
However, some copyright holders believe that short posts can even help promote some works. Therefore, they do not usually go following users who make these publications. However, posting the entire production is another story.
