O TikTok today announced two slightly different novelties. The first one is that the Nowfeature that was basically a clone of the app BeRealis being discontinued. It was integrated into the network app in the United States, but it worked as a separate app in other regions.

Launched in September last year, the feature had the same proposal as the other social network, consisting of users making records with both smartphone cameras every day. The “symbiosis” was such that the end of Now is happening right along with the cooling off of BeReal, following it became a real fever.

How did I bring the The Verge, TikTok is sending notifications to users informing them of the end of Now. In the brief statement, the network says it is “updating the experience”. It is also said that content shared with the feature will remain saved in the Memories area.

Filters in Family Sync

The other novelty is related to the resource Family Sync, which now brings the possibility for parents to establish filters on the content that their children see on TikTok. This function, by itself, already exists, so it is possible to limit the display of contents that contain hashtags and keywords that are chosen in the filter, in addition to certain videos being available only to users of legal age.

In this way, the integration of filtering with the parental control function of the network is really new. According to the company, the implementation was carried out in consultation with the Family Online Safety Institute, in order to balance parents’ choices and young people’s right to choose. For this reason, it is worth noting that children can see, by default, the filtered words, in addition to being able to disable restrictions.

All this freedom has already led to TikTok being criticized for the lack of effectiveness of these features in really protecting younger users. The company also announced, according to TechCrunch, a Youth Council, seeking to listen to platform users to “create the safest experience possible”. For some, however, the network just wants to make it look like it’s taking some kind of action.

In any case, the content filtering integrated into Family Sync is in addition to other functions that aim to protect younger TikTok users. A few months ago, for example, a usage limit for young people was announced, which can also be deactivated with the help of a password.
