TikTok is testing a feature to remind you to go to sleep

Tested with a few users, this tool allows setting up bedtime alerts and disabling notifications when they sleep.

Social media users can spend hours on these platforms, day or night. They lose precious hours of sleep as a result. TikTok is working on a feature to fix this problem. Called “sleep reminders”, it allows you to set up bedtime alerts. The social network confirmed to the site TechCrunch that it is currently being tested with a few users.

According to screenshots shared by Watchful.ai, testers can access this feature from the platform’s “Screen Time” setting. After setting a bedtime, they get reminders to close the app when it arrives. Notifications are also muted for the next seven hours – recommended sleep time – to avoid distractions. TikTok thus intends to help users go to bed whenever they want, by letting them know when their bedtime has arrived.

Improve the digital well-being of users

This feature is in addition to other tools and restrictions offered by TikTok to improve users’ digital wellbeing. Already allowing them to manage their screen time, the social network deployed a series of tools for this purpose in June. Among them is a feature to help them control the time spent on the app by scheduling regular breaks. They can thus be prompted to take a break following 10, 20 or 30 minutes of using TikTok or set the duration of a user session themselves before receiving the reminder.

The social network has also announced, in 2021, restrictions to promote more restful nights for adolescents. Concretely, 13-15 year olds no longer receive notifications following 9 p.m. and 16-17 year olds following 10 p.m. Regarding the feature being tested, TikTok did not say if or when it plans to roll it out more widely.
