TikTok adds new permissions for sending messages

O TikTok debuted, without much fanfare, new permissions for its direct messages (better known as DMs). Now, users of the short video app can be more specific when deciding who can send you a message and who can’t.

As noted by TechCrunchthere are now four new options for restricting incoming messages: “All”, “Suggested friends”, “Mutual Followers” e “Nobody”. Until this change, it was only possible to receive messages from users identified as friends or recommended by the social network.

The “Everyone” option, as its name implies, allows anyone on the platform to send direct messages to the user without any restrictions. However, messages from people you don’t yet follow will need to be approved before they appear in the in-app inbox, which is where messages from people you know are kept.

If the user selects the “Suggested Friends” permission, only mutual followers, Facebook friends, and people suggested by TikTok itself will be able to send messages. It is also possible to restrict sending only to “Mutual Followers” and people with whom the user already had conversations.

If you choose the “Nobody” option, not even friends or people you’ve previously started a conversation with will be able to contact you through TikTok. According to the social network, it is worth noting that the user will still be able to access his message history if this option is activated or if a specific contact does not fit the criteria of the other options.

To change who can contact you through the app, just go to your profile, tap the menu button in the top-right corner of the screen, and then go to “Settings & Privacy”. Once that’s done, go to Privacy » Direct messages and select the desired option.
