Tik Tok: End of the US? 2024-04-27 13:58:38

It effectively gives TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, nine months to sell its stake or the app will be banned in the United States.

The bill will now go to US President Joe Biden, who has said he will sign it into law once it reaches his desk.

ByteDance told the BBC it had no immediate response to the move. The company had previously said it would oppose any attempt to force it to sell TikTok.

If the US succeeds in forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok, any deal would need approval from Chinese officials, but Beijing has vowed to oppose any such move. Analysts say the process might take years.

“For years we have allowed the Chinese Communist Party to control one of the most popular apps in the US, and that has been dangerously short-sighted,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, the highest-ranking Republican on the Intelligence Committee.

“The new legislation will require the Chinese owner (of TikTok) to sell the app. It’s a good move for America,” he said.

The measure was passed as part of a four-bill package that also included military aid for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other US partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

It had broad support from lawmakers, with 79 senators voting for it and 18 once morest.

Its CEO, Shou Zi Chew, said last month that the company will continue to do everything it can, including exercising its “legal rights” to protect the platform.

The social media platform has made efforts to rally support once morest the potential ban, including a major lobbying campaign.
