Tiger Woods propelled Nike into the previously closed world of golf
Nike confirmed shortly after the announcement, again on social media: “You challenged the entire institution of golf. You challenged us. And especially yourself. We are grateful to you,” writes the brand on this subject. Woods has been a Nike brand ambassador since 1996, when he was 20 years old. Knight signed Woods to a five-year, $40 million contract when he turned professional following his third straight US Amateur victory, saying at the time of Woods: “The world has never seen anything like this what he will do for sport. Nike Golf equipment became a leading brand thanks to Woods, and his cleats grew in popularity. Its equipment division, however, never took off and stopped producing clubs and balls in 2016.
