The tiger mosquito, potential carrier of dengue fever, Zika or chikungunya

The tiger mosquito can be a vector for many viruses such as those of dengueof Zika or chikungunya.

Last year, three cases of dengue, including one in Strasbourg, were reported to the union during the period of activity of the tiger mosquito. These were imported cases.

No known indigenous case yet in the Bas-Rhin

Conversely, there has never been, to date, an indigenous case detected in the Bas-Rhin, at least no indigenous case known, because there are asymptomatic cases.

For a first autochthonous case to appear, it is necessary that several conditions are met.

A sick person must already arrive in the department and still have virus in their blood, “because the person has no virus in their blood for the duration of the illness”, underlines Christelle Bender, union technical officer.

Then, this person has to come back when the tiger mosquito is active, and be bitten by it. But the temperatures must also be above 18 degrees at the same time, “for the virus to replicate in the mosquito”, explains the specialist.

Only then can a tiger mosquito carrying the virus bite a healthy person and make them sick.

A 100% urban mosquito

The tiger mosquito is 100% urban. In other words, it is not found in the natural environment, because it likes so-called artificial lodgings, that is to say those proposed by man.

These are all containers that can retain water for more than a week, such as rainwater collectors, watering cans, buckets, or cups.

To control the tiger mosquito, it is necessary act at the source. And, to act at the source, it must be prevented from having access to the lodgings. “Any type of container where there has been water at some point can contain eggs, so you have to remember to clean these containers regularly with a stiff bristle brush to loosen/crack the eggs,” advises Ms. Bender.
