The reason why Tidal Connect, Chromecast and 3rd party apps are not playing “Hi-Res” FLAC is due to outdated Tidal API. Devices that support Tidal Connect may not yet have their firmware updated, preventing playback of music files from Tidal’s library that are in FLAC “Hi-Res” from occurring. The same goes for third-party applications such as UAPP (USB Audio Player Pro), Hiby Music, Roon and Audirvāna.

Currently, only the Tidal app is capable of playing the FLAC “Hi-Res” track files. If you are using any device that supports Tidal Connect, songs identified as “Max” will be played in MQA format.

Examples of device manufacturers that support Tidal Connect:

Bang & Olufsen
Bluesound
Cambridge Audio
DALI
Dynaudio
Electrocompaniet
KEF
Londemann
Lost
MOON by Simaudio
Matrix Audio
McIntosh
THEY
Naim
Samsung
Silent Angel
Sony
WiiM
dCS
iFi

How do I access FLAC Hi-Res music on Tidal?

Currently, to be able to access music in FLAC Hi-Res on Tidal, you must use the native application and connect the device responsible for playback (cell phone, tablet, notebook) via USB cable to an external DAC or DAC/amp. However, I noticed that there are still some bugs accessing tracks from certain albums on Tidal. If you access an album through your favorites, it is very likely that you will still play some songs in MQA, but when searching for the same track in the application’s search box, there is a chance that a version in FLAC and another in MQA will appear.

If you want to access FLAC Hi-Res songs via Tidal Connect, you’ll need to wait for a device firmware update that supports the feature. In the case of third-party applications, you will have to wait for the developers to release a new update.
