In accordance with Agenda 2063, Zlecaf (African Continental Free Trade Area) represents a major step in the real achievement of Africa’s economic integration. Due to its political and geostrategic scope, the Zlecaf constitutes an accelerator for the creation of a continental market for goods and services, the facilitation of the free movement of economic operators and, consequently, the dynamism of the establishment of a customs union and an African economic community here 2028.
Tunisia, which has made the socio-economic development of Africa one of its priorities, was among the first countries to sign the Zlecaf membership agreement. Its operationalization would open up a market of 1.2 billion consumers and increase intra-African trade, by eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers across Africa. This will help create more opportunities and jobs for African citizens, develop regional value chains and strengthen infrastructure and the basis for intracontinental trade.
This Agreement paves the way for deeper regional integration and faster and more sustainable growth, just as it promises customs and tariff advantages for trade, services, products, etc.
With solid companies present in Africa, proven expertise, Tunisia can serve as a reliable accelerator for the establishment of the Zlecaf. The latter can only be operational if Africa has large African multinationals, which produce and export throughout the continent. It is the weight and contribution of these African champions that can give a boost to intra-African trade.
Last week, Tunisia issued its first two Zlecaf Certificates of Origin for MPC Prokim and LA CSM Gias. These certificates promote privileged access for Tunisian products to African markets, opening up new opportunities for entrepreneurs, industries and farmers. This timely achievement reinforces the confidence of trading partners and demonstrates Tunisia’s commitment to African economic integration. This will contribute to economic growth, job creation and a more inclusive future for the country and Africa as a whole.
This achievement is the result of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Commerce and Export Development, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tunis, the Tunisian Customs, the private sector, GIZ Tunisia and all the stakeholders who worked tirelessly for this operation.
The Zlecaf will certainly have a positive impact on the national economy and will, among other things, increase the capacities of Tunisian companies in terms of trade, diversification, structural transformation…
Recall that Tunisia had joined various regional integration projects, in particular with the signing, since 2018, and then the ratification in 2020, of the agreements establishing the Comesa market and the Zlecaf.
