LSupport for purchasing power in the event of persistent price increases would require urgent measures, particularly in the form of targeted aid distributed to the most vulnerable categories who have suffered the effects of the rising cost of living. Moreover, and in terms of the functioning of the market, it is imperative at present to broaden the scope and reinforce the frequency of control and respect for competition in the different sectors, in particular those relating to essential goods and basic products, in order to combat any practice of cartel or abuse of dominant position that could further deteriorate the purchasing power of citizens. In the grip of an acute economic and financial crisis for years, Tunisia regularly experiences shortages affecting many basic and consumer goods. In addition to flour and semolina, other products are almost absent from the shelves, such as milk, sugar (diverted via other circuits), coffee, rice, etc. Shortages caused by speculation and the disorganization of distribution circuits. Taking his difficulties patiently, the Tunisian citizen ended up adapting to this new situation which had become structural, resorting to often circuitous methods to obtain supplies. At a time when Tunisians are expecting concrete measures to ensure a regular supply of basic food products to the market, the Ministry of Trade and Export Development has, firstly, resorted to freezing the prices of several non-administered products, and then to the sale of extra virgin olive oil, produced by the National Oil Office, at a preferential price set at 15 dinars per month. liter. For its part, the Ministry of Agriculture has just launched a new experience in producing wholemeal bread with a new flour rich in fiber. This flour, extracted from soft wheat, will be used to make baguettes with better nutritional value and at the same price as classic baguettes (190 millimes). The objective being to better govern the cereal sector, meet the needs of the consumer… It is also a solution to deal with climate change, especially since the cereal harvest did not exceed 0.3 million tonnes compared to forecasts estimated at 1.2 and 1.5 million tonnes. These decisions are part of a series of measures taken to support citizens’ purchasing power and reduce prices. The question is whether these measures would be sufficient to put an end to the spiral of shortages and inflation which only feed themselves. Indeed, the Ministry of Commerce has promised an end to the persistent shortage of several basic products, notably milk and flour, which are out of stock at points of sale across the country. Besides, Economic specialists and experts agree to confirm that these repeated shortages do not hide deep problems in relation to the difficult economic situation that the country is experiencing and, above all, to the acute crisis of public finances.
