May 25 was the 1time tick vector disease awareness day. The objective was in particular to widely disseminate prevention measures and the first clinical signs to recognize.

47,000 cases per year

In France, in 2021, it is estimated that nearly 47,000 cases of Lyme borreliosis were diagnosed in general practice, an incidence of 71 per 100,000 inhabitants. Approximately 810 cases are admitted to hospital each year, more than half having neurological manifestations.

It was estimated in 2016 that around a quarter of the population had been bitten by a tick in their lifetime, a proportion that had increased to almost a third in 2019.

Although cases are reported throughout the year, the majority are diagnosed between the months of June and October, which corresponds to the season of maximum tick activity in France. In the absence of a vaccine, preventive measures against bites are essential.

79% of French people know this disease

In 2019, 79% of the French population said they had heard of Lyme borreliosis, versus 64% in 2016. There is still a significant part of the population that needs to be made aware of the subject.

In addition, 42% of the population felt they were well informed about the disease in 2019 compared to 28% in 2016.

In 2019, 66% of people bitten by a tick said they used a tick puller or fine tweezers to remove it while 32% said they used other non-recommended methods.

Of the people who felt exposed to tick bites:

  • 17% said they used a repellent;
  • 74% stated that they used long clothing as a means of protection in the event of exposure;
  • 53% said they inspect their body and remove ticks after exposure.

The implementation of means of protection is therefore still too limited.
