Published by Team 17, known for the Worms series, Thymesia is a Souls like very inspired by Bloodborne developed by the Taiwanese studio of OverBorder. While the game is scheduled for August, a demo is already available and we give you our impressions following completing it.

In Thymesia, OverBorder introduces us to a kingdom in which death is spreading due to a strange disease. The player then embodies a mysterious character known as Corvus, with his face hidden by his pointed mask, who must uncover the truth by exploring his own memories that make up the title levels. The adventure therefore takes the form of an Action-RPG in which you progress from one group of enemies to another, until you face a particularly difficult boss to face.

Bloodborne in the text

Well, let’s say it right away: yes, Thymesia looks extremely similar to From Software productions, especially Bloodborne. Whether in the style of play, in the atmosphere, and even in details like the message of death, it is difficult to miss the feeling of deja vu. However, there are still some differences. First of all, the title does not have a stamina gauge, which allows the player to chain hits and dodge at will. However, this does not mean that you can strike without stopping without danger, because it must be taken into account that the enemies are not necessarily interrupted when they take damage. On the other hand, the game pushes you to be aggressive since opponents can recover life if you don’t hit them for a while. Concretely, the wounds of your opponents are represented by the green color on their health bar.

Controller in hand, we can therefore attack with his sword, deflect enemy blows, but above all use the powers of our character who draws his strength from the disease that is spreading in the game world. Thus, Corvus can strike using a claw which, when charged, allows him to copy an opponent’s ability to spawn “spectacle” weapons like swords or axes. Moreover, this same claw also allows you to consume the green parts on the life gauge of your opponents, that is to say their wounds, so that they do not regenerate. Additionally, your character can also throw a feather to interrupt an enemy’s critical attack.

A gameplay more nervous than that of Souls like?

Thanks to these two options, the seemingly classic gameplay gains in depth.. Despite everything, the handling of our amnesiac hero remains quite special, in particular because of the dodges which are only a step aside, at least in this demo. Indeed, faced with the first feedback from the players, the developers specified on their Twitter account that the character’s avoidance abilities are very basic in this trial version, but that they can be improved throughout the game thanks to a skill tree.

After this short demo of barely twenty minutes, Thymesia seems to have a certain potential that it does not fully present to us in this extract. If the possibility of copying the ability of his opponents is nice, the handling of the character is for the moment quite special but should be refined in the final version thanks to the different skill trees. However, if the close proximity of the title with Bloodborne will please fans of the latter, the lack of glaring originality may not please everyone and put off more than one. In any case, we just have to wait for the game to be released next August to see if the full experience will live up to its promise.
