Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Saudi authorities announced, on Tuesday, that they had thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 12.7 million tablets of narcotic amphetamine hidden in a shipment of pomegranate fruit through the Jeddah Islamic Port.
A spokesman for the General Directorate for Narcotics Control said, in a statement, that “the security follow-up of drug smuggling and promotion networks targeting the security of the Kingdom and its youth resulted in thwarting an attempt to smuggle 12.7 million tablets of the narcotic amphetamine hidden in a shipment of pomegranate fruit through Jeddah Islamic Port, in coordination with the authority.” Zakat, tax and customs.
He added, “The recipients were arrested in Jeddah Governorate, and they are 4 people: two residents of Egyptian nationality and two residents of both Syrian and Yemeni nationalities,” according to what was reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

It is noteworthy that the Saudi authorities announced, last year, the largest seizure of illegal drugs in the history of the country following concealing nearly 47 million amphetamine pills in a shipment of flour and confiscating them in a warehouse in the capital, Riyadh, and millions more pills have been intercepted since then.
