Thwart Smuggling of 29 Kilograms of Crystal Meth, Customs and BNN Secure Six Suspects

SYNERGY between Customs, the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN), and the Aceh Police succeeded in thwarting an attempt to smuggle more than 29 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine from an international network from Thailand.

This action was carried out around the waters of Kuala Idi, Idi Rayeuk, East Aceh Regency on Sunday, September 8, 2024, by securing six suspects.

Head of the Public Relations and Customs Counseling Sub-Directorate, Budi Prasetiyo, explained that this action began with information from the public regarding the shipment of narcotics by a Malaysian-Indonesian network using a ship in the Idi Waters, Aceh.

Following up on this information, Customs, BNN RI, and the Aceh Police conducted intensive surveillance and succeeded in detecting a fishing boat (oskadon) which was suspected to be the target.

“After surveillance from the previous day, on Sunday (08/09) we found the ship within 20 miles of Kuala Idi Beach, Aceh. During the inspection, we found 50 packages of crystal methamphetamine packed in three white sacks,” said Budi.

The total weight of narcotics found reached 29,251.54 grams or 29.25 kilograms.

Some suspects even threw evidence into the sea, so that authorities found each package wet.

In addition to confiscating crystal methamphetamine, the joint team also secured three crew members (ABK), namely JP alias PU, SA alias BA, and AL.

From the results of the inspection, they admitted to getting the illegal goods from a Thai-speaking person in the waters around Adang Island, Thailand.

Not only that, the case was developed and three other suspects were successfully secured in two different locations, namely PH alias PU as the ship coordinator at the Idi Fisheries Port, Blang Geulumpang, and MK and MN alias NA who were arrested in a pond in the Gempong area, East Aceh.

Thus, the total number of suspects arrested is six people.

Budi also said that in this enforcement effort, several Customs offices were involved, including the Narcotics Interdiction Directorate, the Enforcement and Investigation Directorate, as well as the Aceh Customs Regional Office, the Riau Islands Special Customs Regional Office, and the North Sumatra Customs Regional Office.

The suspects are now facing a maximum sentence of death or life imprisonment, in accordance with Article 114 (2) Jo Article 132 (1) sub Article 112 (2) Jo Article 132 (1) Law No. 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.

“Through this action, we have succeeded in saving 58,503 children of the nation from the potential of drug abuse. We also appeal to all levels of society to be more aware of the threat of drugs and create a drug-free environment. Indonesia Shines, Clean of Drugs,” concluded Budi. #MIA (RO/Z-10)
