The end of the intense heat will be accompanied in the next few hours by “thunderstorms, sudden gusts of wind and local hailstorms”. In the centre, a worsening is expected in the afternoon hours in Tuscany and along the Apennines. In Sardinia, “even intense thunderstorms are expected that could spread towards the eastern and northern coasts of the island”, while in the south, attention should be paid to the peninsular Apennines and the inland areas of Sicily. “The situation is destined to worsen drastically during the night and the early hours of the following morning”, Sunday 18th Augustexperts explain. The intense worsening will particularly affect Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria and Lombardy.

A yellow alert for thunderstorms has also been issued by the Civil Protection ofEmilia-Romagnavalid from midnight today, Saturday 17 August, to midnight tomorrow, Sunday 18. “The phenomena are expected to be particularly intense on the central-western reliefs, with precipitation that could generate increases in the hydrometric levels in the smaller watercourses”, the notice reads.
